about

The nuckelavee ( /nʌklɑːˈviː/) or nuckalavee is a horse-like demon from Orcadian mythology that combines equine and human elements. It has its origins in Norse mythology, and British folklorist Katharine Briggs called it "the nastiest" of all the demons of Scotland's Northern Isles. The nuckelavee's breath was thought to wilt crops and sicken livestock, and the creature was held responsible for droughts and epidemics on land despite being predominantly a sea-dweller.

A graphic description of the nuckelavee as it appears on land was given by an islander who claimed to have had a confrontation with it, but accounts describing the details of the creature's appearance are inconsistent. In common with many other sea monsters, it is unable to tolerate freshwater, therefore those it is pursuing have only to cross a river or stream to be rid of it. The nuckelavee is kept in confinement during the summer months by the Mither o' the Sea, an ancient Orcadian spirit, and the only one able to control it.

Orcadian folklore had a strong Scandinavian influence, and it may be that the nuckelavee is a composite of a water horse from Celtic mythology and a creature imported by the Norsemen. As with similar malevolent entities such as the kelpie, it possibly offered an explanation for incidents that islanders in ancient times could not otherwise understand.

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend" is an ancient proverb that suggests that two opposing parties can or should work together against a common enemy. In this case, the nuckelavee served as a catalyst to create a community by serving as a common enemy for many different peoples with many backgrounds.

lyrics

We've been down this road before
A battle rife with hatred
and a need to settle the score

Entrenched in a vicious Feud
A lifetime of consuming violence
Carved into a point of view

You have seen the worst of me
You know the monster I can be
But in this war we now see
Another adversary,
A common enemy

A foe that lives in Carnage
A demon of disease
An evil, incarnate
A villain and fiend

We are now the only ones
Who can see what's to come
The panic and fear will seek to overcome

Don't believe fear-mongering
Sense of self is everything
Staring straight into the unknown screaming
Screaming

I am the iron steed
Riding through the fields of doom and misery
I'm a living Creed
Built to Fight a war with every fiber of my being
I am the sharpened blade
Fixed upon the sword to cut down that which hunts me
We are the same
Armed and ready takedown, this villain, this fiend

It now hunts me, it hunts me
You want to hunt me, let's go
You want to know me, you want to know
You want to know me, let's go
