about

The Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, better known by its informal name "Jonestown", was a remote settlement in Guyana, established by the Peoples Temple, a San Francisco-based cult under the leadership of Jim Jones.

The settlement became internationally known when, on November 18, 1978, many people died at the settlement, at the nearby airstrip in Port Kaituma, and at a Temple-run building in Georgetown, Guyana's capital city. The name of the settlement became synonymous with the incidents at those locations.

All people died but two from apparent cyanide poisoning, in an event termed "revolutionary suicide" by Jones and some Peoples Temple members on an audiotape of the event, and in prior recorded discussions. The poisonings in Jonestown followed the murder of five others by Temple members at Port Kaituma, including United States Congressman Leo Ryan, an act that Jones ordered. Four other Temple members committed murder-suicide in Georgetown at Jones' command.

Terms used to describe the deaths in Jonestown and Georgetown evolved over time. Many contemporary media accounts after the events called the deaths a mass suicide. In contrast, most sources today refer to the deaths with terms such as mass murder-suicide, massacre, or simply mass murder. Seventy or more individuals at Jonestown were injected with poison, and a third of the victims (304) were minors. Guards armed with guns and crossbows had been ordered to shoot those who fled the Jonestown pavilion as Jones lobbied for suicide.

The massacre at Jonestown represented one of the largest losses of American civilian life in a deliberate act until September 11, 2001.

The song is about the survivors who fight PTSD every day from this experience.

lyrics

V1
There was not A single Doubt in my mind There will always be another burden defined Or to define
The trauma The violence Will always have some kind of consequence The pain engrained in time

V2
It's been said There are times You may question this life And all the pain that has consumed you The mirror holds the truth
Now sever Internal Attachment To lifeless validation Instead of being human

Chorus
In desperate times There is compromise of self-delusion In burdened eyes There are cracks of resolution

V3
With battles And carnage We see Collateral Damage... damage everything Including our own psyche
So, with this Confession, I speak words of remorse And with words carve a different course And begin to mend what was broken Mend what was broken

Chorus 2
In desperate times There is compromise of self-illusion In burdened eyes There are cracks of resolution Entangled in bloody vines Which Pull apart your very core Take heed of the signs The Shattered Endure
