In the Norse religion, the story of Balder is told in many ways. The gist of the story is Balder, who is another son of Odin, and Loki talks about how Balder isn't as loved as he thinks. This leads to a bet that if Loki kills Balder which in turn puts him into a sort of prison, everyone will weep for him and in doing so would release him from death and resurrect him. Loki then shapeshifts and pretends to be one of those meant to weep and refuses, sealing Baldur’s fate. Then, out of anger, Odin puts Loki into a similar prison. He escapes and with his wife, Sigyn ends up having a baby. This child releases the giants and brings about Ragnarok. That child was known as Fenrir.
The song is actually about the self-destruction we bring about upon ourselves when our self-image does not align with who we actually are in reality. This creates a dissonance internally which in turn can bring about our own end.
This is a very special song to me. I had the opportunity to work with one of my favorite vocalists of all time, Bjorn Strid from Soilwork and Night Flight Orchestra. To make this song even better, my longtime friend who also happens to be a talented drummer, Ben Engen, did the drum work for the song.
